The Christmas Market will be open 11-17 both Saturday and Sunday. I will be there the whole time, braiding both children and adults. You can also buy gift vouchers for braiding courses or individual hairdos.

I share my table with two illustrators: Maija Hurme and Emmi Jormalainen. They will be selling their books (excellent idea for a present), cards, posters, stickers and these lovely wrapping papers:

Ruusutarha

(scroll down for a short version in English)

Hair for special occasions / Juhlakampauksia

(Suomeksi alla)

I’ve been asked to do a lot of braids for all kinds of parties from weddings to school reunions. I thought I’d compile some of my favourite hairdos for special occasions.

If you like these and you’re looking for a Christmas present idea for someone near Helsinki, I have gift vouchers for sale in my online shop.

Ladder braid updos look great, and there are a million variations. Here, couple of quick ones from last summer:

Intricate braids take a lot more time, but are beautiful and eye-catching:

Accessories can turn any hairdo a bit fancier. Few days ago I did a normal 4-strand with pearls:

And last but not least, my favourite hairdo, that will work on almost any type of hair: double starburst bun. Here I’ve done it on 1) long & thick hair, 2) mid-length & fairly thin and 3)  short & thin hair. Always looks beautiful.

Challenge 2: multiple strands

I always thought you’d need more than 2 hands for more than 4-strand braiding. But I’ve seen so many pictures of 5, 6, 7 and more strands in a that I started to think it must be possible.

So I started to practise. Now I can do up to 6 strands french braid, dutch braid and lace braid.

two four strand french braids into a cheat's 9-strand braid

Here are some examples:

These are two 4-strand braids finishing in a “cheat’s 9-strand braid”. That means I left a thin strand of hair out in the nape of her neck, then looped that through the two 4 strand braids, combining them into a 4+1+4= 9-strand braid.

(By the way, this is my youngest daughter, who just turned 3, and who’s hair is getting very long and increasingly braidable)

5-strand mermaid braid half-up-do

The next one is a 5-strand “mermaid” braid.

I’ve promised to make a tutorial for this one, but at the moment we are so busy with an upcoming house move, that I barely have time for photos, never mind videos (but I’ll always have time for braiding).

Finally, my first (and so far only) attempt at a 7-strand french braid. Very messy and uneven, and still my fingers were nearly on a knot after this, so I just have to carry on practising!

My first attempt at a 7-strand french braid

Ribbons, ribbons, ribbons

We had a birthday party for my youngest girl today. All the girls were up early, had chosen their dresses and were waking me up to do fancy hairstyles for the party! (Girls!!!)

They wanted something fancy, with shiny new ribbons that we bought last week. So it was a great excuse to go over the top a bit:

4-strand french braid with blue ribbon

The first one is my favorite of the three, probably because I got to choose the ribbon color! And it’s very easy. It’s a 4-strand french braid, but one strand is ribbon instead of hair.

Ribbon dutch braids

The second one is a bit Christmasy, but my daughter has worn this dress pretty much all the time since Christmas (apart from school), so we did the same color ribbon… For this hairdo, I did two dutch braids and then threaded the ribbon through with a help of a bobby pin.

dutch braids into a bun with a ribbonThe last one is definitely over the top, but she absolutely loved this style, so what can I say! It was quite difficult to do the two up-side-down dutch braids and the bun, but the ribbon was quite easy to thread through the stitches of the braids.

These styles lasted well through the day, and the girls went to bed with them. We’ll have to wait and see how much fixing I need to do in the morning, but they want to have the ribbons for school and kindergarten tomorrow!

Another quick one

two 4-strand slide up braids tied back into oneContinuing from last week’s quick and easy hairdos… Here’s one that you will need to practise a little bit, but once you’ve got it, it’s fast, easy and impressive.

Cute Girls Hairstyles did a one-sided version of this, and I think Mindy explains it so well, that there is no point of me trying to do instructions, click here for a link to CuteGirlsHairstyles video tutorial on the 4-strand slide-up braid. When you do this 4 strand braid, there is one strand that will never get to the outer side, in the end you hold onto that strand and slide the rest of the braid up (this will all make sense if you watch Mindy’s video tutorial)

So, for my version, I just did the 4-strand slide-up braid on both sides, and tied it back. I love this one because it looks a bit unusual and makes people look twice.

You will need reasonably long hair for this one, a bit below shoulders, to be ably to have long enough braids to “slide up”. Also, the problem with smaller kids is, that the hair easily sticks out from the middle, but to prevent that, you could tie all the hair and the little braid into a low ponytail at the back.
